Autumn haikus
Pink ribbon clouds
silence the carolling
auspicious sunriseSometimes I need to feel
the sunset chill my skin
to know I’m aliveLeaves float in puddles
autumn wind exfoliates
almond tree’s dead skinAll day hauling logs
out of the storm-buckled shed
grey clouds regroupThreading a path
through the woods I’ve been saving
for winter’s first breathDawn mist makes spectres
of eucalypt. First frost bites
autumn’s shortened tailNot even the mist
can extinguish the pear tree’s
autumn leaves aflameThe morning light weaves
a patchwork quilt of shadows
on the fallen leavesMorning mist conceals
a dusting of frost on straw
like sprinkled sugarThe sun’s dying rays
gently warm the lonely stones:
shadows grow taller.
