Refuge at Diamond Bay

I was walking between the moonah dunes

when the path turned in towards the road

but out of sight, and the clamour of waves

and the battering of wind fell away

as though I had entered a quiet room

or a theatre once the lights go down.

I stayed a moment to savour the silence

until the ocean called me back

once more to its ceaseless, merciless drama.
